5 Surprising Habits That May Be Causing Your Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most common health complaints in Australia and around the world, affecting people of all ages. It’s estimated that nearly 80% of people will experience back pain at some point in their lives, and it’s a leading cause of missed work and medical visits.

However, the source of back pain isn’t always obvious. You don’t have to have lifted a heavy object or experienced a traumatic injury for your everyday habits to be causing or contributing to your discomfort.

Sometimes, it’s the small, everyday habits that can gradually strain your spine. In this blog, we’ll explore five surprising, everyday behaviours that can lead to back pain and offer practical tips on how to fix them. By making small, consistent adjustments, you may find relief and possibly avoid more serious issues down the line.

1. Sleeping on Your Stomach

Why it hurts: When you sleep on your stomach, your lower back is forced into hyperextension, and your neck is often twisted to one side. Both positions strain the spinal joints and misalign your spine throughout the night.

How to fix it: Try shifting to a back or side sleeping position. If that’s difficult, place a thin pillow under your hips to reduce the lumbar curve and use a soft, low-profile pillow for your head so your neck is less twisted. Gradually retraining your sleep posture can make a big difference.

2. Carrying a Heavy Bag on One Shoulder

Why it hurts: Slinging a heavy backpack, handbag, or laptop bag over one shoulder creates muscle asymmetry, overworking one side while weakening the other. This can pull your spine out of alignment and lead to aches throughout the spine.

How to fix it: Switch to using both straps if it’s a backpack, or alternate shoulders more frequently. Even better, downsize what you carry or opt for a backpack with supportive, padded straps and proper weight distribution.

3. Wearing Improper Footwear

Why it hurts: Shoes with poor arch support or high heels alter your posture and shift your body’s centre of gravity. Over time, this misalignment travels up the chain, placing undue stress on your spine and lower back muscles.

How to fix it: Invest in supportive, well-fitting footwear. Look for shoes with cushioning, arch support, and a slight heel-to-toe drop. Reserve high heels or fashion-only footwear for limited occasions.

4. Looking Down at Your Phone — “Text Neck”

Why it hurts: Constantly looking down at your phone for texting, scrolling, or reading places tremendous strain on your neck and upper spine. This “text neck” posture can lead to stiffness, pain radiating into the shoulders and back, and even headaches.

How to fix it: Raise your phone to eye level when using it. Practice chin tucks by gently drawing your head back so your ears align over your shoulders. During intense sessions, take frequent breaks; set reminders to stand and stretch your neck and shoulders every 20 minutes.

5. Favouring One Leg When Standing

Why it hurts: Leaning on one leg while standing can throw off your hip alignment. One side of your pelvis drops while the other compensates, causing asymmetrical tension that reverberates up your lower back.

How to fix it: Be mindful to shift your weight evenly between both legs. Periodically switch which leg you favour. Strengthening your glutes and core can also help maintain better balance and posture.

The Bigger Picture

Back pain often has multiple, intertwined causes. Muscular tension, poor posture, repetitive strain, emotional stress, and even poor sleep or nutrition can all play roles. Yet, these everyday “small” habits often go overlooked. The good news? Small habitual shifts can have surprisingly big results, especially when done consistently.

Consider a holistic approach to addressing back pain. While timely visits to a chiropractor or qualified health professional may help correct misalignments and offer strategies for relief, your daily habits form the foundation of spinal health. Exercise, posture awareness, stress management, and ergonomics all work together in synergy to reduce pain and keep your body balanced.

Back pain doesn’t always stem from a dramatic injury; it can quietly emerge from everyday habits like sleeping on your stomach, carrying a heavy bag on one shoulder, wearing unsupportive shoes, craning your neck toward your phone, or leaning on one leg. Recognising these less obvious culprits and making easy adjustments can significantly relieve strain and set you on a path to greater comfort.

If you’re experiencing persistent or worsening back pain, consider reaching out to a trusted health professional, such as a local chiropractor, to explore personalised, holistic care that gets to the root of the issue. With small changes and the right support, you can reclaim a healthier, more comfortable spine.
