Are Your Headaches Caused By Your Posture?

Many people experience headaches from time to time, but for some, they are a recurring problem. What many don’t realize is that your bad posture and headaches could be linked! Poor posture, spinal misalignment, and spending too much time on screens or sitting in the same position are all common causes.

There are many different types of headaches, but those related to posture often include cervicogenic headaches and tension-type headaches. Cervicogenic headaches originate from tension in the upper cervical spine (the top of your neck). When the spine is misaligned, it puts extra tension and pressure on the neck muscles that attach to your skull. This can create enough strain to cause headache symptoms.

Understanding the Symptoms of a Postural Headache

Tension-type headaches are a combination of muscle tension and stress, which can be either physical or mental. The symptoms of both cervicogenic and tension-type headaches can be quite similar, and may include:

  • A dull, aching feeling, often at the base of the skull.
  • Pressure that starts at the back of the skull and wraps around the forehead.
  • A band-like feeling of tightness around your head.
  • Neck and shoulder tightness.

When we talk about posture, it’s not just about looking straighter—it’s about how it affects your everyday comfort and health. Poor posture often results in your head jutting forward and your shoulders rounding, creating a slouched appearance. This slouching increases tension on the muscles attached to the base of the skull and the cervical spine, leading to pain and aching throughout the neck and head. These postures are often made worse by prolonged sitting and poor ergonomic setups.

How to Reduce Your Postural Headache Symptoms

Fortunately, there are things you can do to help yourself and potentially reduce the onset of a postural headache:

  • Be aware of your posture and keep your head and shoulders aligned.
  • Correct your posture throughout the day whenever you notice yourself slouching.
  • Add in regular movement breaks to reduce muscle tension from staying in the same position for too long.
  • Strengthen your postural muscles by doing specific exercises that help support your spine and head.

Chiropractic care may also help by keeping your spine aligned and ensuring the joints, especially in the top part of your neck, are moving well. A chiropractor can provide everyday tips, tricks, and exercises to help with your symptoms.
