Why Hydration Is Crucial for Joint Function

It’s a well-known fact that staying hydrated is essential for overall health. Drinking enough water allows your body to function optimally at a cellular level. But did you know that hydration is vital for the health and function of your joints, too?

The impacts of dehydration on joint function are often overlooked, but staying hydrated is the key to keeping your joints in optimal condition throughout your life.

Joint Health and Hydration Explored

The Anatomy of Joints

Human joints are comprised of a tissue called cartilage. Cartilage is a flexible material that forms caps on the ends of your bones, allowing them to move together smoothly and absorb the impacts of physical activity.

Cartilage comprises collagen and other proteins, but most of this tissue is comprised of water. Some types of joint cartilage can contain up to 80% water, meaning that water is absolutely essential for the formation and maintenance of joint function. Cartilage in the joints is also moistened and supported by synovial fluid. This fluid allows nutrients to flow to your cartilage and joints, assisting with their repair.

When your body is low on fluids, your cartilage also becomes dehydrated. This can make it weak and fragile, hindering its ability to cushion and protect your joints. This increases the risk of injury, pain, and wear and tear.

Dehydration and Inflammation

Inflammation is often referred to as the root of disease, and for good reason. Dehydration can increase chronic inflammation in the body, and joints are not exempt from this inflammation.

The Arthritis Foundation notes that as many as 80% of inflammatory, arthritic health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and gout stem from chronic, systemic inflammation.

Proper hydration is essential for controlling chronic inflammation. By mitigating this inflammation, you may be able to reduce your risk of arthritic conditions, which cause pain, stiffness, and swelling of the joints.

Preventing Stiffness and Pain

Hydration can do far more than prevent joint conditions. When you drink enough water, you can also reduce joint stiffness, discomfort, and pain. Dehydration can impact the volume and texture of the synovial fluid in your joints and cartilage. It also limits the production of this fluid, which can cause joint stiffness and hinder flexibility.

Proper hydration ensures that synovial fluid is present in the right concentrations and consistency to allow for smooth joint movement. When your joints move comfortably, they are better able to withstand shock, reducing your risk of injuries and the likelihood of experiencing stiffness, swelling, and pain after exercise.

Ensuring Optimal Hydration

You may have heard doctors recommend drinking eight cups (around two litres) of water daily. This is a reasonable guideline, but the right amount of water for you depends on various factors. These include your level of physical activity, age and health status, the temperatures and climate in your area, and whether you have diagnosed health conditions like cardiovascular or kidney disease.

If you are very physically active, live in an area with a warm or hot climate, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a pre-existing health condition, you may need to drink extra water to protect the integrity of your joints.

That said, drinking too much water can be hazardous, too, so it’s important to identify an ideal balance. We recommend speaking to your trusted healthcare provider to determine your specific needs.

Tips for Keeping Your Body and Joints Hydrated

The importance of hydration is clear, but even though you can view it as a form of preventative care, it can be challenging to maintain your hydration status in the long term. The trick is to diligently practice staying hydrated at all times until it becomes a healthy, longevity-promoting habit.

Use these tips to optimise your hydration levels and preserve the health and function of your joints.

Drink Water Upon Waking

Start your day by drinking one or two glasses of fresh water immediately after getting out of bed. This will provide your body with the fluids it needs to address any nighttime dehydration and begin its process of removing toxins from your tissues and bloodstream.

Set Alarms and Reminders

If you struggle to remember to drink enough water during the day, consider setting a reminder or alarm on your phone, tablet, or smart watch. Set a reminder for every hour to ensure that you are drinking water consistently throughout the day.

Keep Fresh Water With You

One of the best ways to remain hydrated is to always keep a bottle of water with you while you work, travel, and exercise. As there are environmental and health concerns associated with plastic water bottles, it’s best to invest in a few good-quality, eco-friendly, refillable stainless steel or glass bottles that are safe to use and easy to clean. Leave these bottles on your desk, in your car, in your bag, or in other easy-to-reach spots so you never run dry.

Add Interesting Flavours

Many people find it challenging to drink plain water, preferring the taste of coffee, soda, or juice. While the latter options contain water, their caffeine and sugar content can promote dehydration and inflammation in the long run.

Try flavouring your water with slices of citrus fruits, berries, cucumber, and herbs like mint to give it a unique taste. Herbal teas like green tea, chamomile tea, and rooibos tea are also great options for adding a burst of flavour.

Include Hydrating Foods in Your Diet

Much of our hydration comes not just from water but also from hydrating foods. Eating foods like salad greens, oranges, watermelon, cucumber, berries, and celery can improve your hydration status and provide you with health-boosting nutrients.

Prolonging the Health Span of Your Joints

Hydration is the key to maintaining healthy, pain-free joints for as long as possible, especially if you are highly active, live in dry or hot areas, or have a chronic joint condition.

Drinking enough water will ensure your joints have the synovial fluid reserves they need to move smoothly and support your favourite daily activities. This will extend your health span as you’ll enjoy better freedom of movement and an improved quality of life for a longer time.

Our team at Total Health Chiropractic can also provide expert guidance on increasing joint mobility, reducing stiffness and pain, and safeguarding your health and wellbeing.
