Morning Neck Pain? What It Might Be Telling You

Have you ever woken up with a sore neck? You thought you’d had a great night’s sleep, you roll over to jump out of bed, and ouch—there’s that painful neck again. While it isn’t normal, it is a very common issue for people to wake up with neck pain every morning. The pain can range from mild stiffness to sharp, acute discomfort, and can even cause you to feel restricted and stiff through your shoulders, upper back, and arms. Waking up with a sore neck can be incredibly frustrating and put a real damper on your entire day.

Let’s explore some of the reasons why this happens and what you can do to help manage it.

In most cases, morning neck pain is mechanical. It’s often related to how your body was positioned or supported during sleep, rather than a specific injury. So, let’s talk about how your habits, particularly during sleep, can contribute to your morning neck pain.

Common Causes of Morning Neck Pain

Pillow Problems

Is your pillow supportive enough?

Your pillow should allow for optimal neck alignment while you sleep. This means it should support the natural curve in your neck when you’re on your back, or keep your head in line with your shoulders and spine when you’re on your side. Side sleepers, in particular, often need a thicker pillow to account for their shoulder height.

Sleeping Position

You’ve probably heard it before, but sleeping on your side is often best. Awkward sleeping positions can place strain on muscles, ligaments, and joints throughout the body, but the neck is especially vulnerable.

  • Stomach sleeping forces your head to be twisted to one side for the entire night. That’s a lot of pressure and stress on your neck. Imagine walking around all day with your head tilted to the side!
  • Pillow height is also crucial. Sleeping with your neck too flexed or too extended can create strain.
  • Side sleeping without support between the knees (like a pillow) can cause an uneven pressure distribution throughout the spine and neck.

Daily Habits

Your posture is important for your comfort levels and spinal function throughout the day, but it also plays a role in your nighttime position. Postural imbalances from spending lots of time sitting or leaning over a computer or phone don’t disappear when you go to sleep. In fact, these issues may be aggravated while you are sleeping, which leads to pain upon waking. It’s a vicious cycle!

Stress

Are you always stressed?

Chronic stress can lead to significant muscle tightness in the neck and shoulders. You might even find yourself grinding your teeth at night when you’re extra stressed. This can cause you to wake up with a sore jaw, head, neck, and/or shoulders.

Spinal or Joint Issues

In some cases, underlying spinal and joint conditions can also cause you to wake up with a sore neck. Conditions like arthritis or disc issues can make you more susceptible to pain, especially after sleeping for several hours.

It’s important to note that there are many reasons you may wake up with a sore neck, and any discomfort, even mild, is worth paying attention to. Pain and stiffness are your body’s way of signaling that something isn’t functioning optimally, and it’s your sign to do something about it!

It may be easy to brush it off, especially if the pain eases throughout the day. However, ignoring small issues may cause them to progress into more persistent and/or severe problems long-term. Your chiropractor will be able to pinpoint any underlying spinal and joint conditions and give you their best recommendations on how they can help you with your morning neck pain.

Understanding and addressing the root cause of your pain can help reduce or prevent recurring discomfort. Some easy things to do at home include morning movement and stretches, paying attention to your pillow, mattress, and sleeping position, staying hydrated, and being aware of your posture throughout the day.
